About Us

The Center for Africana Studies in the intellectual home students, researchers, and faculty across the campuses of Johns Hopkins University whose interests revolve around the histories, political ideas, artistic production, educational concerns, and social movements among black people throughout the African Diaspora. As a unit committed to knowledge production that reorients how we think about, study, and understand the world, CAS offers a space and intellectual community that thrives in such innovative, ethically responsive knowledge production focused on the unique perspective that issues from the history and experience of racism, colonialism, racial capitalism, and geography that properly situates the importance of Black peoples to the making of the modern world. We thus focus on enhancing the educational experience of our undergraduates, supporting and expanding the intellectual inquiries of our graduate students, supporting and publicizing the work of our diverse faculty, and engaging with Baltimore’s black community and the larger black world.
